India v/s Nepal - is there a chinese angle?
- Nov’19: India revised map to create two UTs, Nepal showed discomfort
- Early 2020: India inaugurated its road in same region, Nepal showed discomfort
- May 2020: Nepal revised map to include same region in their side
- June 2020: Nepal guards shot Indian, parliament passed new map
All these recent developments are surprising since Nepal has been a long term ally and it has always sorted out differences with talks and never has it been this hostile. So, it will be good to see the long History of this region, which has suddenly become the bone of contention.
Before 1990s, when Nepal didn’t have elected govt, India has been patroling and maintaining this area. The area was tactically important during our war with China. Then, since 1990s, Nepal govt and their people wanted this part.
In 2008, Nepal got a communist govt and China’s interference also began. Theywanted treaty with India from 1950s to be revised as well.
In 2018, two of the communist parties in Nepal were merged to create a govt. One party leader became PM and another didn’t like it.The other leader has been complaining about it since then Even this year, Chinese delegates went Nepal to discuss the issue.
China is also having a face off with India in Ladakh region and that is why our army chief said Nepal’s sudden attitude change may be Chinese work
Historically, Nepal has never been so offensive and things have been sorted out by talks.
This time, Nepal is behaving strangely. The road that was inaugurated by India in early 2020, has been under construction since 2008. The project has always been public.
That is why Nepal’s sudden opposes raises eyebrows.
Also, since Nepal PM is facing backlash from the leaders wihin the govt, who support the second party leader, he wants to look more nationalistic and powerful leader to gain public support.
Many people also discredit this china theory. They say, that in the region, china and India has been on the same side for trade benefits and Nepal has always opposed both.
But, looking at -
1. Strategic importance of region for India against China
2. Nepal’s internal politics
3. Ladakh standoff
4. Sudden change in Nepal’s behaviour
5. Indian army chief’s statement
It will be very foolish to discredit any role of China in this.
